Hi Everyone

I'm thinking about getting a new neck for one of my guitars. The reason is that I'm going to try my hand at some fretwork on the current one, so I'll need a replacement when it goes wrong :)

Anyway, the current neck is 21 fret maple with rosewood fingerboard. I lowered the action recently and can't get rid of some fret buzz that has happened as a result. There are some frets that are quite worn (almost dented) in places where the strings press against them, which means that I can get intermittent buzzes in various places on the neck. The only way to remove the buzz is to raise the action again. In fairness, the neck (and the rest of the guitar) is quite old and has had a lot of abuse over the years. So I'm going to try levelling/crowning/polishing the frets to see if I can make it any better.

Just in case, I've had a look on Axesrus for replacement necks. They seem okay and reasonably priced. So I wondered;

Has anyone here used them or got necks from them before?
Got any other place they'd recommend for necks?
Would a 22 fret neck be an option? My other guitar has 22 frets and I sometimes want that last fret on this guitar.
I'm toying with the idea of an all maple neck. Any opinions?

Thanks for any advice

David

Hi David :)

I've not used Axes for necks, but they've been great for all the other stuff I've bought from them.

21 and 22 fret necks are generally interchangeable - as long as the 22 fret neck has an overhang at the fretboard end. If not, you may have to do some surgery to the heel of the neck to get things to fit and keep the right intonation for the scale length.

I use a guy who sells on Ebay for my necks. Have a look for CH Guitars. The CH is Chris Howe. A genuinely nice bloke who does lightning-fast delivery and his prices are good.
